This wonderful ancient art is something very dear to me. I started my first Bonsai at age 16 as an apprentice nurseryman at a wholesale nursery. I was hooked for life, this form of horticulture was not on my radar when I first joined the industry, but it soon became a big part of my life both at work and at home. I was taught by a lifelong friend and colleague (sadly no longer with us) who introduced me to the craft and had a vast experience as he worked at a bonsai nursery before joining us at the wholesale nursey.
I began to build a collection of Bonsais at home and people started asking if I would sell them? Well, that started me off on short journey of doing some to sell. To cut a very long story short, I was selling them at trash and treasure markets on the weekend and supplying retail nurseries. Then life got in the way, I built a house got married and had children, and bonsais soon became a thing of the past, but never forgotten. I have always kept an eye on the art and often went to bonsai exhibitions marvelled at the amount of care and time some people had spent and invested onto these wonderful miniature trees.
Years went by, and I shifted to Werribee 16 years ago now, and I vowed and declared I would go back to creating bonsais. Well, building a new edible garden, and becoming as self-sufficient as I can be, meant bonsais again took a back seat, until July 2025 when I was about to throw out a Kalamata olive, I had no room for in the garden that was showing some signs of life, so I said to myself, "the only way I can keep you is to bonsai you". I promptly found a plastic training pot and say down and create my first bonsai in many years. I could not believe how much I enjoyed it and just how much I have missed creating them. Well, I can honestly say that I am well and truly back into this ancient art big time! I am back wholesaling them to Plant nurseries and I am selling them also from home to you if you live nearby.
I am also running classes to teach this wonderful art, so it is not forgotten, and it is such a wonderful hobby. It is a great way to stay in touch with plants and horticulture particularly if you are challenged for space and cannot have much of a garden. I find great relaxation and revival from creating and tending to bonsai, it slows you down and clears your thoughts as you concentrate Soley on the task at hand. Great for good mental health if nothing else. Bonsai classes listed below, and a small gallery of what I have on offer.
